A simple RDA in XML example, with options

Karen Coyle, July, 2011

There's a lot of talk about what we will do with RDA as data - what format we will use, how it will look to users, etc etc etc. In fact, the options are legion. The key point is that we don't have to decide on just ONE WAY to carry and store RDA data elements, as long as we follow a few rules.

As an experiment, I have coded a very simple bibliographic record using two different possible ways to encode RDA in XML. For the XML data elements I use the RDA elements from the Open Metadata Registry. These elements are defined in OWL, and therefore are compatible with semantic web applications. Their use in XML (and by that I mean non-RDF XML) may be a bit questionable, yet at the same time XML may be a good transition format from our current data to a ful RDF-based implementation.

Here is the bibliographic data that I used:

LC control no.: 87211501
Type of material: Book (Print, Microform, Electronic, etc.)
Personal name: Omescu, Ion.
Uniform title: Hamlet. French
Main title:        Hamlet, ou, La tentation du possible : essai / Ion Omesco ;
                      avant-propos d'Henri Gouhier.
Edition: 1re éd.
Published/Created: Paris : Presses universitaires de France, c1987.
Related titles: Tentation du possible.
Description: ix, 278 p. ; 21 cm.
ISBN: 2130401309
Notes: Includes index.
                   Bibliography: p. [269]-270.
Subjects: Shakespeare, William, 1564-1616. Hamlet.
Series: Littératures modernes
LC classification: PR2807 .O45 1987
Dewey class no.: 822.3/3

Next I present the two XML files that I've created, side-by-side, in their entirety. I confess that I have not created an XML schema for this work, partly because I haven't done a schema in a while and would have to study up, but also because there are so many RDA data elements (around 1000 as I recall) that creating a schema is a huge undertaking. The RDA Toolkit has (or had, not sure) an XML schema for RDA core, but it didn't use URI forms for the elements.

Note that I welcome comments on better ways to do this, and consider this an exercise not a declaration of how RDA should be coded.

CommentsComments
  • Hamlet. French. I wasn't sure if "French" was part of the intended Work title or not. I'm not totally clear on headings v. elements.
  • ISBN: The ISBN presents some particular problems here. It is listed in RDA as an identifier for the manifestation, but it isn't. The identifier for the manifestation needs to be the identifier for the FRBR-defined entity, and the ISBN is an identifier given by publishers to particular products.
  • LCC and Dewey. You can see here that there isn't a way (yet) to distinguish LCC and Dewey from any other subject heading or term. I suspect that at least one of these belongs in the item area, although perhaps in a different form.
  • Some things that are text here will be represented by URIs in the future. In particular we can expect the personal names and subjects to all have URIs. They don't yet, which is why I have left them here as strings.
  • Items like LCC, Dewey, ISBN, become more identifiable because the URI includes the domain name that identifies them. Without URIs it becomes necessary to create separate fields or some other designator to let you know the identity of the identifier.
  • The record with URIs contains less human-readable data. The assumption is that a display will replace the URIs with text, just as in the example MARC record the MARC fields are replaced by human labels.
